What you need to know to tow this summer!

5/16/2024

Spring is now in full swing, and it’s time to start preparing for the summer fun, like getting the trailer or camper ready or hooking up the boat to the back of your truck for a camping weekend. Still, knowing your towing essentials this summer will keep you enjoying the trip!

1. Check your tire and air spring air pressure before driving. Make sure your tires and air springs are completely ready to go, and the air springs are inflated to the correct air pressure, or at least 5 PSI.

Give your Air Lift air springs and air lines a quick rinse for general air spring maintenance. Salt, dirt, gravel, and road grime can build up under your vehicle, potentially causing a leaky fitting or rust. Visually inspect your air springs, check that your air line is attached to the vehicle, and reattach any section that may have come loose.

To check for leaks, spray your air spring, air line, and fittings with soapy water.  Cycle the system and watch for any bubbles to form. If you spot a leak, tighten everything up and cycle the system again.

2. Load up right – Your trailer must be loaded correctly for the safest journey possible. Aim to place about 60% of the load in the front half of the trailer and evenly distribute the weight on both sides. Additionally, secure the contents to prevent any movement while driving.

3. Know your trailer height to clear overhead structures – If your trailer is taller than your truck, you will want to make sure you can clear any bridges or overhead structures on your way.

4. Adjust your trailer’s brakes to accommodate more weight – Some trailer brakes are controlled electronically, but some need to be manually adjusted. If that’s the case, adjust your brakes to be stronger to accommodate the increased weight. This can be crucial for enhancing braking efficiency and control.

5. Give yourself room to change lanes or make wide turns – Your vehicle will be longer with a trailer, and cutting turns too tight will result in hitting the curb or anything else in your path. Give yourself more time and space than you think you might need!

6. Keep an eye on your speed and how your driving feels – Ensure you’re stopping with enough distance from the vehicle in front of you because of the extra weight.
